The War of 1812
Collection
This collection of learning resources supports
supports the BC Social Studies 9 curriculum. It can be used in
many other contexts where teachers want to present an overview of
the War and its impact on the evolution of North America.
It is based on two videos, both entitled The
War of 1812 - a 1998 four-part series by Canada's National
Film Board and the 2011 American Public Broadcasting Service's 2
hour video. Both are easily obtained and inexpensive additions
to a school or teacher's personal library.
Additional resources in the collection as based on
volume 5 of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Canada: A
Peoples' History series and Better Classroom Guidebooks'
Events in Canadian History crossword puzzles.
The variety of resources included in this Collection
will enable teachers to easily present the War of 1812 using anyone
of these powerful videos. The CBC production covers many of
the significant events in Canada and deals best with the social
conditions in Upper Canada. The NFB production at 3 hours is
able to devote more attention to describing the major land battles
of the conflict and their impacts. The 114 minute long PBS
production provides a balanced view of the war and as might be
expected a bit more detail about events in the US and the war at
sea. All are excellent.
